Martakia …. The red and white bracelet of March

We have the tradition in Greece every March 1st to wear a red and white bracelet called martaki.

Made with the traditional red and white cotton or macrame thread. According to tradition, Martaki protects the faces of the children from the first sun of Spring. We make it the last day of February and wear it on the first day of March, before we leave the house.

According to the tradition we have to wear it until the end of the month and then leave it on the roses in order to be seen by the first swallow and use it to build their nest.

Welcome March
